Baseball in the Dominican Republic: the heroes, the national team and game nights at Itza

Published November 7, 2026 5 min read

Spend a week in Cap Cana and someone will ask which team you follow. Baseball, called pelota here, is the country's shared language, and its stories are told about people as much as seasons: the pitchers and sluggers now in Cooperstown, the national side that won a world title unbeaten, the winter league that fills the ballparks while owners are on the island. This guide gives an Itza owner enough of that story to join the conversation, and explains how to follow it from the residence, starting with the private sports bar.

Five plaques in Cooperstown

The quickest way to understand what baseball means here is to start with the five Dominican-born players in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Juan Marichal, the high-kicking pitcher, was the first, in 1983. Pedro Martínez followed in 2015, then the free-swinging Vladimir Guerrero in 2018, David Ortiz in 2022, and Adrián Beltré, inducted on 21 July 2024 as the fifth.

Each name opens a conversation. Mention Marichal to an older Dominican and you will hear about the leg kick; mention Ortiz and the talk turns to October nights in Boston. For a new owner these are more than trivia. They are the reference points people use, and a little familiarity goes a long way at a colmado counter or with the staff who will look after the building.

The national team: one unbeaten title and a near miss

Club loyalties divide the country; the World Baseball Classic unites it. In 2013 the Dominican Republic won the tournament with an 8-0 record, the first champion to go through it unbeaten, and closed it out by beating Puerto Rico 3-0 in the final in San Francisco on 19 March 2013.

The 2026 Classic came close to a repeat. Managed by Albert Pujols, the team won its first five games and then lost the semifinal 2-1 to the United States at loanDepot Park in Miami on 15 March 2026. The Classic is played in March, outside the winter season, so for an owner it is a spring event: the kind of game a whole building watches together.

The winter league in one paragraph, and the nearest ballpark

Between the Classics, the Dominican professional league carries the game through the winter. It has 6 clubs, and its 2026-2027 season opened on 16 October 2026, with a regular series of 150 games scheduled to end on 23 December 2026 before the playoffs. The two Santo Domingo clubs, Tigres del Licey and Leones del Escogido, share the capital; in the east the local club is Toros del Este.

Toros del Este play at the Estadio Francisco Micheli in La Romana, which holds about 8,838 spectators and is about 55 miles by road from Itza's location in Cap Cana. That is an evening out with a driver rather than a casual trip, so most owners will see a game or two in person and follow the rest on a screen. Check the start time on the day: games move when the weather turns.

Game nights at Itza

Itza is planned as 52 residences in 4 stepped towers, with delivery scheduled for Q4 2029, and its published amenities include a private sports bar alongside a 24-hour restaurant, a coworking space and a retro arcade and game zone. For a baseball household that is the obvious gathering point: a winter-league derby, a Classic game in March, or a major-league game featuring a Dominican star.

A few words help at any screen. The game is pelota, a home run is a jonrón and a strikeout a ponche; a fan is a fanático. Learn which club your neighbours and the building's staff follow, and you will never be short of company on a game night. For owners who rent their residence, a note on the season and where to watch is a welcome touch for guests who arrive in the winter months.
