How an Itza Owner Can Use Marina Cap Cana

Published October 17, 2026 8 min read

Marina Cap Cana is Cap Cana's inland yacht harbour, listing more than 150 slips for yachts of up to 250 feet, with a fuel dock and customs and immigration on site, and it is 3.1 miles by road, about 8 minutes, from Itza Golden Residences in Golden Lakes. Because the lake in front of Itza's towers is meant for non-motorised water sports, the marina is where engines and the open sea begin for anyone living here. This page covers what it takes to charter a boat there, when the fish run, what keeping your own boat involves, and what the marina offers on a day without one.

What is Marina Cap Cana, and how far is it from Itza?

Marina Cap Cana is the yacht harbour of Cap Cana, the gated community where Itza is planned. The marina lists more than 150 slips for yachts of up to 250 feet, and its services page adds a fuel dock, individual slips and alongside berths, water at the slip, dry storage, a captain's lounge and customs and immigration facilities; sailing references list it as a port of entry. It was built inland rather than out into the sea, and the operator describes a basin free of surge, reached through a dredged and marked channel whose controlling depth it gives as 11.5 feet.

From Itza the trip is short, but it is a drive. The towers stand on El Dorado Avenue in Golden Lakes, and the road to the marina measures 3.1 miles, about 8 minutes by car. Itza is not a marina-front building and does not present itself as one: what it offers someone who loves boats is a home inside the same community as the harbour, with a lake right at the foot of the towers.

Lake at home, sea at the marina: which water is for what?

The four towers face a navigable lake with its own lakeside beach, and that water is meant for non-motorised sports, the kind done with a paddle or a sail. Anything with an engine, and any trip that needs the open sea, starts at the marina instead. The split is worth understanding before you buy, because it shapes what a week on the water looks like from here.

In practice the home and the harbour share the day. Calm water is on the doorstep, with the lake club and the semi-olympic lap pool that runs the length of the site; a fishing trip, a sail along the coast or an afternoon on a chartered boat begins with the 8-minute drive. A buyer who pictures a berth below the balcony should know before signing that Itza's water is a lake, not a harbour.

How do you charter a boat at Marina Cap Cana?

The simplest way onto the water is a boat that comes with a crew. The marina takes charter requests through a form on its own website, and the form shows how a trip is put together: it asks for a passport or cédula number, the size of the group, a length from half a day to four days, a budget, and the group's fishing experience, from rookie to pro. It publishes no prices, so ask for a written quote.

Before agreeing to one, ask what the quote covers: fuel, crew, bait and tackle, food and drink. Ask how many people the boat takes and what happens if the weather keeps boats in port, because cruising reports describe the Dominican Navy holding departures when it judges conditions unsafe. A charter-booking marketplace's 2026 guide to fishing in Punta Cana says the charter takes care of the fishing permits for its trip; for fishing from a private boat, ask CODOPESCA, the Dominican fisheries council, which licence applies.

The marina presents itself as a base for sailing and touring the coast as well as for fishing, and if you rent your residence out, its request form is the simplest thing to hand a guest who asks about a day on the water.

When are the fish running off Cap Cana?

The marina publishes its own fishing calendar, rating the months it marks for each species on a four-step scale from good to outstanding. It is a sound starting point for planning a fishing week from Itza, with two cautions: it is a 2023 graphic, and fish keep their own schedule. The marina describes itself as a catch-and-release marina, so a marlin or a sailfish goes back into the water.

Its tournament calendar has a white marlin tournament in late May (21 to 23 May in 2026) and the Cap Cana Classic, a catch-and-release billfish tournament, in the autumn (12 to 14 November in 2026). During the 2025 Classic, fished on 10 and 11 October by 30 registered boats, one reporter's boat ran 30 miles, about an hour, out into the Caribbean to water averaging 2,000 feet deep. And the calendar is a guide rather than a fence: a sport-fishing magazine reported boats releasing more than two dozen blue marlin in a single day off Cap Cana in November and again in December 2025, after the months the calendar marks for them.

The marina's own fishing calendar, a 2023 graphic on its sport-fishing page: the months it marks for each species, and the months it rates highest.
SpeciesMonths on the calendarRated highest
Blue marlin May to October July (outstanding); June and August (excellent)
White marlin March to July May and June (outstanding); April (excellent)
Sailfish August to November September and October (excellent)
Wahoo October to January November (excellent)
Tuna September to January October and November (excellent)

Can you keep your own boat at the marina?

Yes, as a separate arrangement. No boat slip appears among Itza's published amenities, so a berth is agreed with the marina itself, which lists slips for yachts of up to 250 feet as well as dry storage. Ask about availability and terms for your boat's exact length and draft before planning around it. The paperwork depends on where the boat is registered, and it is worth setting up with a Dominican maritime attorney before the boat arrives.

  1. Settle the flag
For the Dominican register, a Dominican law firm's 2014 note names two offices: the Maritime Registry, which registers boats and grants the flag, and the Navy, which certifies seaworthiness and issues navigation permits, adding that some recreational craft are spared those certificates but must still register with the Navy. Which documents your boat needs is a question for your attorney.
  2. Clear in a foreign boat
A boat arriving from abroad can clear in at the marina, which lists customs and immigration facilities. Importing it for good, which Customs calls nationalisation, takes the file Customs publishes (entry form, a current Navy authorisation for the stay, the registration, the last port's exit form, the owner's passport or cédula), filed with a request to pay the import taxes.
  3. Agree the berth
Put the slip terms in writing with the marina, and check your boat's draft against the controlling depth of 11.5 feet that the marina gives for its approach.
  4. Plan for hurricane season
The season runs from 1 June to 30 November. The marina describes its inland basin as protected, but its storm procedures and your insurer's conditions decide where the boat sits when a storm is forecast.
  5. Clear each passage
Cruising reports describe the despacho, a Navy clearance for every move between Dominican harbours, free for a domestic move, with a separate one to leave the country. Ask the marina office how it applies to the trips you plan.

What is at the marina when you are not going out on a boat?

The marina is also a place to go without a boat. Cap Cana's own dining directory groups a cluster of the community's restaurants around it, with a minimarket steps from the docks and a liquor shop at the marina, and the marina lists gift shops selling beachwear, souvenirs, Dominican rum, coffee and tobacco. When the 2025 Classic ended, the awards were presented at a dinner on the marina's esplanade.

Families get a date of their own: the marina's Kids Fishing Fest, held on 4 April in 2026, teaches children to prepare bait, cast a reel and release what they catch. For a household at Itza that is an easy morning out, 8 minutes from home.

What does the marina add to owning at Itza?

It widens what a week at home can hold without changing what the home is. Itza is 52 residences in four stepped towers on a lake, from $378,000, with delivery planned for Q4 2029, and none of them sits on the harbour. What the address gives someone who loves the water is short distances inside one community: the marina 8 minutes away for engines and the open sea, the lake at the foot of the towers for anything without a motor, and the lap pool for the days when nobody wants a boat at all.
